Description
155 discrete, non-nuclear ultraluminous X-ray sources with luminosities exceeding 10^39 erg/s, identified in 82 galaxies observed by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. The catalog, created by the HEASARC in March 2007, contains positions, luminosities, and spectral and timing characteristics for these sources. Analysis suggests correlations with host galaxy star formation, merging, and interactions.
Use Cases
Studying the radial distribution of high-energy sources within galaxies based on the described strong central peaking.
Modeling the spectral properties of ultraluminous X-ray sources based on described power-law indices and column densities.
Investigating the link between star formation and X-ray source populations based on described correlations with host galaxy properties.
Assessing source variability in X-ray astronomy based on the described 5%-15% variability rate during observations.
Estimating background contamination in extragalactic source catalogs based on the described comparison to Chandra Deep Field results.
Strengths
Contains 155 identified sources with spectroscopically confirmed high luminosities.
Provides specific statistical summaries, such as 83% of sources fitting an absorbed power law with mean index Gamma=1.74.
Includes analysis of source variability (5%-15%) and estimated background contamination rates (e.g., 44% in elliptical galaxies).
Correlates source properties with host galaxy characteristics like recent star formation and interactions.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The catalog is based on data from 2007; newer observations may exist.
Provenance
Source
NASA HEASARC, based on CDS catalog J/ApJS/154/519.
Collection Method
Observational data gathered by Chandra's Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS).
Time Range
Observational dates are not specified, but the catalog was created in March 2007.
Freshness
Last updated 2026 03 13 17:34:49.502959; freshness should be verified against more recent astronomical surveys.
Geography
Extragalactic; sources are located in 82 distinct host galaxies.
