A prospective study of 1,532 older adults in Detroit tracked spousal bereavement with matched controls over four waves from 1987 to 1993. Its primary strength is a unique quantitative grief scale and six subscales developed to measure bereavement, alongside measures of depression, social support, and physical health. For a subset of 432 participants, the MacBat study added biomedical indicators including physiological, endocrinological, and cognitive measures.
License is listed as 'Open Access (green)' but specific terms are not detailed. The core dataset contains 1,532 persons, excluding 'clones' (13 individuals who initially participated as a control subject but later experienced spousal loss).
