Description
High-resolution CTD/STD data from R/V Knorr, REDOUBT, and RV Alpha Helix provides nearly continuous profiles of temperature, salinity, and other parameters at depth intervals as fine as 1 meter. The data, processed to the NODC F022 standard, covers the Bering Sea, Coastal Waters of Southeast Alaska and British Columbia, and the North Atlantic Ocean from 1977-06-02 to 1982-10-25. Each station record includes cruise information, position, date, time, and may include meteorological and sea surface conditions.
Use Cases
Analyzing vertical water column structure based on temperature, salinity, and density (sigma-t) profiles.
Studying temporal changes in oceanographic conditions across specific regions like the Bering Sea from 1977 to 1982.
Calibrating or validating ocean models using high-resolution, instrument-collected profile data.
Investigating relationships between surface environmental conditions (meteorological data) and subsurface ocean properties.
Strengths
Data is high-resolution, with profiles potentially reported at depth intervals as fine as 1 meter.
Covers a multi-year time range (1977-1982) across three distinct oceanographic regions.
Processed to a recognized standard (NODC High-Resolution CTD/STD F022 format), suggesting quality control.
Limitations
Key metadata is missing or conflicting: row count, file size, and specific column names are unknown.
The dataset's last update date is inconsistent, with one source showing 2026 (likely a metadata refresh) and another showing 1982 (the data end date).
Documentation gaps exist, as the full list of measured parameters (e.g., dissolved oxygen, transmissivity) is not explicitly confirmed for all casts.
Provenance
Source
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce
Collection Method
Collected using CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) and STD (salinity-temperature-depth) instruments aboard research vessels, then processed by NODC.
Time Range
1977-06-02 to 1982-10-25
Freshness
2026-03-05 23:15:33.823934 (This appears to be a metadata update; the underlying data collection ended in 1982.)
Geography
Bering Sea, Coastal Waters of Southeast Alaska and British Columbia, North Atlantic Ocean
Data values may be subject to averaging, filtering, or interpolation. The specific parameters measured (e.g., dissolved oxygen) may vary by cast.
