Description
September 1988 to March 1991 data collection from 57 stations in the Greenland Sea, North Atlantic, and Norwegian Sea. The Applied Physics Laboratory gathered Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD), Bathythermograph (XBT), and Sound Velocity (XSV) profiles using research vessels KNORR, ENDEAVOR, and OCEANUS for the Moving Ship Tomography Project. Data includes 495 files originally submitted on magnetic tape, with two example files containing 1,381 and 1,919 records from specific cruise legs.
Use Cases
Analyzing vertical profiles of conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) for water mass characterization.
Studying sound velocity (XSV) measurements for underwater acoustics and tomography modeling.
Examining bathythermograph (XBT) selected depth data for thermal structure of the upper ocean.
Investigating spatial and temporal variability of oceanographic conditions across 57 stations.
Using data from specific cruises (e.g., file L01403, L01404) for process studies on seasonal changes.
Strengths
Data spans a multi-year period from September 1988 to March 1991, capturing seasonal cycles.
Collection from 57 distinct stations provides spatial coverage of the Greenland Sea region.
Data is processed into standard NODC formats (F022-CTD-Hi Resolution, C125-Bathythermograph-XBT-Selected Depths).
Example file details show specific record counts (1,381, 1,919) for quality verification.
Limitations
Exact total row count and complete column schema are not provided by any source.
Sources conflict on the 'last updated' metadata, with dates ranging from 1991-03-22 to 2026-04-01.
Original data format (1600 BPI magnetic tape, ASCII) may present accessibility challenges.
