Description
Geoscience Australia developed the Australian Maritime Boundaries (AMB) 2014a data as a digital representation of Australia's domestic and international maritime limits and boundaries. The dataset includes territorial baselines, outer limits of maritime zones, and boundaries from treaties, covering waters adjacent to the mainland, offshore islands, and External Territories. Coordinates are supplied in the GDA94 datum, and the data reflects the coastline as of May 2014.
Use Cases
Delineating legal maritime zones for resource exploration based on the limits defined in the Seas and Submerged Lands Act 1973.
Mapping state and territory coastal waters for jurisdictional analysis using the Coastal Waters Acts mentioned in the description.
Visualizing treaty-defined international maritime boundaries for diplomatic or legal reference.
Integrating maritime limits with offshore petroleum and greenhouse gas storage planning areas as referenced in the OPGGSA 2006.
Strengths
Developed by the authoritative national agency Geoscience Australia in consultation with other Commonwealth departments.
Covers a broad geographical extent from approximately 7°S to 70°S latitude and 40°E to 175°E longitude.
Includes technical amendments based on user feedback, such as harmonization in block SC51.
Limitations
Data currency is May 2014; coastline representation is constrained by source material available at that time.
The description notes that in the event of an inconsistency, the legal limits under legislation prevail over the digital data.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
