Description
The Catalog of Open Cluster Data (COCD) contains parameters for 513 open clusters and 7 compact associations. It was created by NASA HEASARC in May 2011 based on studies of about 33,000 possible member stars from the All-Sky Compiled Catalog (ASCC-2.5). The catalog provides established parameters like cluster distances, proper motions, radial velocities, and ages.
Use Cases
Analyzing galactic structure and stellar distribution based on cluster distances and positions.
Studying stellar kinematics and cluster dynamics based on mean proper motions and radial velocities.
Investigating stellar evolution and cluster formation history based on derived cluster ages.
Validating cluster membership and parameter determination methods using the associated Open Cluster Diagrams Atlas (OCDA).
Strengths
Contains parameters for a substantial sample of 520 stellar groups (513 clusters, 7 associations).
Derived from a high-precision, homogeneous source catalog (ASCC-2.5) of 2.5 million stars.
Includes cluster distances for 200 clusters, radial velocities for 94 clusters, and ages for 195 clusters derived for the first time.
Provides supporting diagrammatic data (OCDA) for visualizing membership and parameter accuracy.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Last updated 2026-03-13 19:21:47.168641; freshness should be verified as the underlying studies are from 2001-2004.
Provenance
Source
NASA HEASARC, based on CDS Catalog J/A+A/438/1163.
Collection Method
Derived from studies of wide neighborhoods of clusters using data from the All-Sky Compiled Catalog of 2.5 Million Stars (ASCC-2.5).
Time Range
Underlying stellar data from the ASCC-2.5 (Kharchenko 2001).
Freshness
Catalog created in 2011 based on studies from 2001-2004; metadata shows a future last update date.
Geography
All-sky coverage.
