Description
2000s-era data includes absolute counts and relative abundances of diatom species from sediment and water samples collected during LMG0502 and NBP0603 research cruises. The dataset, managed by SCIOPS, provides diatom counts alongside latitude, longitude, water depth, sea surface temperature, salinity, and sea ice observations. Samples are stored at the Antarctic Marine Geology Research Facility and Colgate University.
Use Cases
Reconstruct past sea surface conditions by correlating diatom species abundances with recorded sea surface temperature and salinity data.
Analyze the relationship between diatom community composition in sediment cores and concurrent physical oceanographic data like pCO2sw and transmissivity.
Model historical sea ice distribution using diatom counts from sediment samples alongside the recorded observational data on local sea ice and glacial ice.
Investigate spatial gradients in primary productivity by comparing phytoplankton counts from water samples with underway surface fluorometry readings.
Strengths
Includes paired biological (diatom counts) and physical (temperature, salinity, pCO2) data for integrated analysis.
Samples cover multiple environments from sediment cores to water column phytoplankton.
Geographic context provided via latitude, longitude, and water depth for all sediment samples.
Limitations
Exact sample count, temporal range, and dataset size are unspecified.
Data availability is contingent on contact with the Principal Investigator, not direct download.
Potential for spatial bias limited to the Larsen Ice Shelf region and specific cruise tracks.
Provenance
Source
SCIOPS, with samples stored at Antarctic Marine Geology Research Facility (Florida State University) and Colgate University.
Collection Method
Samples collected via Smith-McIntyre grab sampler and kasten corer during research cruises LMG0502 and NBP0603; microscopic analysis of prepared slides.
Time Range
2000s (based on cruise identifiers LMG0502 and NBP0603).
Geography
Larsen Ice Shelf region, Antarctica.
