Description
Fifteen priority species, including 12 birds and 3 cetaceans, were identified for a rapid information exploration by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. This record describes a collated data inventory for the Shy Albatross (Thalassarche cauta) in relation to the Gippsland offshore renewable energy declaration area. The inventory was published by the Australian Ocean Data Network and last updated on June 5, 2026.
Use Cases
Identify data sources for Shy Albatross occurrence based on the project's inventory of publicly-available data.
Evaluate dataset utility for regulatory assessments based on the project's stated evaluation criteria.
Plan activities to improve data accessibility for species monitoring based on identified gaps in usable formats.
Strengths
Focuses on 15 priority species identified by Australian government authorities DCCEEW and NOPSEMA.
Explicitly evaluates data utility for specific regulatory assessment processes.
Project methodology includes identifying sources, accessibility, and improvement pathways.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic or source bias inherent to the specific government-identified priority list.
