Conceptual Models for Australian Estuary and Coastal Waterway Management

Geoscience Australia developed conceptual models for seven distinct types of Australian estuaries and coastal waterways. The models integrate three-dimensional block diagrams of geomorphology with overlays depicting hydrology, sediment dynamics, and nutrient processes. This work was part of the National Estuaries Assessment and Management project.

• Classify estuary type using geomorphic features like entrance width and tidal area from the conceptual diagrams.
• Model sediment and nutrient trapping potential by analyzing process flow diagrams for wave- or tide-dominated systems.
