Description
A 35-day cruise in early 1994 used the SIMRAD EM12D multibeam sonar system to map 200,000 square kilometers of the continental margin and abyssal plain off Tasmania. The Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) collected bathymetric maps, acoustic imagery, and 6-channel seismic reflection, magnetic, and gravity profiles. The data aims to clarify structural patterns related to the separation of Australia and Antarctica approximately 40 million years ago.
Use Cases
Modeling tectonic history and fault geometry based on detailed bathymetric maps and sonar images.
Planning future seismic reflection programs based on structural information of the continental margin.
Investigating sedimentary history based on the mapping of large-scale sedimentary structures and patterns.
Defining the Legal Continental Shelf boundary based on high-accuracy morphology data.
Strengths
Covers an area three times the size of Tasmania (200,000 square kilometers).
Data collected includes multiple geophysical profiles: 6-channel seismic reflection, magnetic, gravity, and bathymetry.
The SIMRAD EM12D system provided real-time maps with a degree of accuracy and coverage rate described as 'unobtainable in any other way'.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data was collected in early 1994; freshness should be verified for contemporary applications.
Provenance
Source
Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) via the Australian Ocean Data Network.
Collection Method
