Raw seafloor images and metadata collected during the RV Investigator's TEMPO voyage in the East Antarctic sector of the Southern Ocean from 29 January to 24 March 2021. The dataset contains high-quality still images captured during full-depth CTD deployments using a Canon HFG10 camera mounted on the CTD frame. The imagery was gathered to investigate krill activity near the seafloor in abyssal environments.
Use Cases
- Detecting krill presence near the seafloor based on deep-sea camera imagery.
- Analyzing seafloor composition and features from still images taken during CTD deployments.
- Studying the vertical distribution of Antarctic krill beyond the epipelagic zone.
- Correlating biological observations with CTD-derived oceanographic data from the same deployments.
Strengths
- Images were collected during every full-depth CTD deployment throughout the voyage.
- Camera and lighting system activation protocol is documented (activated ~25 m above seafloor, images every 10 seconds).
- Focus adjustment procedure is specified (initial focus at infinity, adjusted to 1 m after two minutes near seabed).
Limitations
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
