Description
May 14 to October 6, 1989, oceanographic data were collected via moored current meters, pressure gauges, and CTD casts from charter and fishing boats in the Bering Sea and coastal Western Alaska. The dataset, processed by the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), includes time-series measurements of current vector components (u, v), seawater pressure, temperature, and conductivity/salinity. It was collected by Edgerton, Germeshausen, and Grier, Inc. (EG&G) and standardized into NODC F015, F017, and F022 formats.
Use Cases
Analyzing tidal and storm-driven water level changes using time-series pressure gauge (F017 format) data.
Modeling coastal current patterns and vector fields from east-west (u) and north-south (v) current component measurements.
Investigating relationships between water temperature, salinity (from CTD casts), and current dynamics in the Bering Sea.
Calibrating hydrodynamic models with Eulerian current measurements taken at fixed sensor depths and positions.
Strengths
Data adheres to established NODC standard formats (F015, F017, F022) with detailed documentation available.
Time-series measurements are reported at a high temporal resolution, typically every 10-15 minutes.
Collection covers a specific 5-month field campaign (May-October 1989) in the environmentally significant Bering Sea region.
Cross-platform presence on NASA Earthdata and Data.gov signals its importance and curation within federal data systems.
Limitations
Critical metadata is missing across all sources, including column names, row count, dataset size, and license information.
Conflicting last update timestamps exist between platforms (2026-03-05 vs. 1989-10-06), obscuring provenance.
Spatial coverage beyond 'Bering Sea - Coastal Waters of Western Alaska and other locations' is vague.
