Description
1003 X-ray sources were detected in a 97.7ks Chandra observation of the young Cygnus OB2 star-forming region. The catalog, created by NASA HEASARC in 2008, correlates sources with optical and near-IR data to study the low-mass stellar population. X-ray luminosities range from 10^30 to 6.3 x 10^33 erg s^-1, with spectral and variability analysis for members.
Use Cases
Classifying stellar populations based on X-ray and near-IR properties mentioned in the description.
Analyzing X-ray variability and flare characteristics based on the reported 13% variability rate and flare statistics.
Modeling stellar absorption and plasma temperatures using the reported typical log N_H and kT values.
Studying the correlation between stellar mass and X-ray luminosity across the reported luminosity ranges for different star types.
Strengths
Contains 1003 X-ray sources with 775 having correlated near-IR counterparts.
Provides detailed X-ray spectral parameters (e.g., log N_H ~ 22.25, kT ~ 1.35 keV) and luminosity ranges for different stellar types.
Includes analysis of X-ray variability, with flares accounting for at least 60% of variable sources.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The description notes that 10 of the 1003 sources are likely spurious statistical fluctuations.
