Description
A predicted seabed mud content grid for the greater Darwin Harbour region in northern Australia. The dataset provides spatially continuous predictions of seabed percentage mud content at a 10-meter resolution, derived from 395 samples and nine environmental variables collected between 2011 and 2017. This resource was created by Geoscience Australia, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, and the Northern Territory Government's Department of Environment and Natural Resources to underpin marine resource management.
Use Cases
Modeling benthic habitat distribution based on predicted sediment composition.
Informing marine spatial planning and resource management decisions based on baseline seabed data.
Calibrating and validating sediment transport models using high-resolution mud content predictions.
Assessing environmental change by comparing this baseline grid with future survey data.
Strengths
Predictive accuracy is described as very high, with a VEcv of 62% for mud.
Predictive accuracy was increased by 198.3% for mud compared to a commonly used interpolation method.
Data is derived from a compilation of multiple surveys conducted by authoritative agencies between 2011 and 2017.
Provides a high-resolution (10m) spatially continuous grid superseding previous predictions.
Limitations
Absences in predictions occur due to non-availability of associated predictive variables.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for certain analytical tasks.
