Description
Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study data from 11,709 participants tracked for approximately 25 years examines associations between orthostatic hypotension (OH) and incident dementia or ischemic stroke. The dataset includes longitudinal cognitive test scores and adjudicated clinical outcomes. It was used in research finding a higher risk of dementia (HR=1.54) and stroke (HR=2.08) in individuals with OH at baseline.
Use Cases
Analyze the association between orthostatic hypotension (OH) status at baseline and incident dementia risk over 25 years of follow-up.
Model the relationship between OH and ischemic stroke incidence using adjudicated stroke outcomes from hospital surveillance and registries.
Examine longitudinal cognitive decline patterns using standardized neuropsychological test scores collected at multiple time points between 1990 and 2013.
Investigate the interaction between systolic and diastolic blood pressure drops upon standing and subsequent clinical outcomes.
Strengths
Long-term follow-up of approximately 25 years for clinical outcomes.
Large cohort of 11,709 participants at baseline.
Adjudicated outcomes for dementia and ischemic stroke, reducing misclassification.
Longitudinal cognitive data from neuropsychological tests administered at multiple visits.
Limitations
Sample size for specific outcomes is limited (e.g., 1068 dementia cases, 842 stroke cases).
Cognitive decline association with OH was reported as non-significant in the source study.
Data is from a specific U.S. cohort (ARIC), which may limit generalizability to other populations.
Provenance
Source
Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study.
Collection Method
Prospective cohort study with data from clinical exams, neuropsychological testing, hospital surveillance, and record linkage.

Baseline exam 1987-1989, with follow-up for outcomes over approximately 25 years. Cognitive tests administered in 1990-1992, 1996-1998, and 2011-2013.
Freshness
Data last updated in 2020, with follow-up spanning from 1987-1989 baseline to approximately 2013.
Geography
