Sequential dissolution data quantifies organic carbon bound to metal oxides versus silicate clay in contrasting wetland and upland soils. The dataset, from a study by Erxiong Zhu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, suggests metal oxides play a greater role in soil carbon protection than silicate clay. Lignin phenol analysis indicates silicate clay dissolution may release an additional ~23% of lignin phenols from soils.
