Description
A 2026 study by Carina Graf compares the performance of commercial 1Tx32Rx and 8Tx32Rx head coils for 7T MRI neuroimaging in six healthy volunteers. The research evaluates seven standard sequences, including B0/B1+ mapping, MP2RAGE, R2*-mapping, MRS, EPI time series, and DTI, on a Siemens MAGNETOM Terra system. Data quality was found to be comparable, with the 8Tx32Rx coil showing specific improvements in inferior brain B1+, spinal cord visibility, brainstem MRS SNR, and white matter tract definition.
Use Cases
Compare B1+ field maps from the 1Tx32Rx and 8Tx32Rx coils to assess signal uniformity in inferior brain regions.
Analyze MP2RAGE anatomical images to evaluate spinal cord visibility in the cervical spine between the two coil types.
Use single-voxel spectroscopy (MRS) data to quantify SNR differences in brainstem measurements across coils.
Process diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data to compare the definition of fitted white matter tracts generated by each coil.
Strengths
Direct comparison of two commercially available head coil configurations (1Tx32Rx vs. 8Tx32Rx) on the same 7T MRI system.
