Description
16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences from environmental samples across polymetallic nodule fields in the Pacific Ocean, including the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone and the DISCOL Experimental Area. The dataset, authored by Batuhan Cagri Yapan and last updated in April 2026, compares bacterial communities among sediments, nodules, and bottom waters. Patterns of benthic bacterial diversity and connectivity extend across spatial scales from tens to thousands of kilometers.
Use Cases
Compare bacterial alpha-diversity between sediments, nodules, and bottom water based on the described sample types.
Identify taxa potentially involved in metal cycling (e.g., Hyphomicrobiaceae, Magnetospiraceae) based on the described community enrichment.
Analyze connectivity and isolation-by-distance patterns in benthic bacterial communities across the Eastern Tropical Pacific.
Investigate how environmental factors like nodule coverage and trophic resources drive community structure differences.
Inform environmental management and conservation strategies for deep-sea mining by modeling regional connectivity and local heterogeneity.
Strengths
Includes samples from multiple key areas: the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone and the DISCOL Experimental Area in the Peru Basin.
Analyses span spatial scales from local (<30km) to regional (thousands of kilometers).
Released under a permissive CC-BY-4.0 license for reuse.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The primary data file is a 7.1 MB PDF, which may require extraction of underlying tabular data.
