A 2026 study by Pia Fehrenbach compares immune cell profiles in 17 patients with surgical site infections after spine surgery against 20 matched control patients without infections. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were analyzed using high-dimensional mass cytometry, identifying 46 immune cell clusters. The research reveals significant differences in 30 clusters, including decreased natural killer cells and increased activated T-cell subsets in infected patients.
