Description
Crop Observatories are initiatives that harmonize large amounts of crop-specific data from various open access sources to build relevant indicators for decision making. Observatories are being developed for rice, cassava, beans, plantain and banana, and tropical forages, containing information on production, prices, policies, breeding, agronomy, and socioeconomic variables. The process and methods are described by author Robert Andrade, with the Rice Observatory launched and the Cassava Observatory about to be launched.
Use Cases
Analyze crop production trends based on harmonized data from multiple open sources.
Monitor price fluctuations and market conditions for specific crops like rice and cassava.
Inform agricultural policy and breeding programs based on aggregated socioeconomic and agronomic indicators.
Support multi-stakeholder collaboration and decision-making to strengthen crop economic systems.
Strengths
Focuses on multiple key crops: rice, cassava, beans, plantain and banana, and tropical forages.
Integrates data across several thematic areas: production, prices, policies, breeding, agronomy, and socioeconomic variables.
Published under a permissive CC-BY-4.0 license, facilitating reuse.
Describes a concrete, launched platform for rice (www.riceobservatory.org).
