Description
263 first-generation seedling-derived half-sib progenies of turmeric were evaluated over two years (2024–2025) in Kozhikode, India. The study by Akkurthi Neeraja measured 17 vegetative, rhizome, yield, and dry recovery traits, finding high heritability for total yield per plant (80.73%) and dry recovery (95.73%). Multi-trait selection indices identified 53 superior progenies, validating seedling progenies as a resource for turmeric breeding.
Use Cases
Developing multi-trait selection indices for turmeric breeding based on vegetative and rhizome traits.
Analyzing genetic correlations and trade-offs, such as the negative association between yield and dry recovery.
Training predictive models for subterranean yield using observable vegetative proxies like leaf width and number.
Identifying superior, stable breeding lines using methods like MGIDI, MTSI, Smith-Hazel, and FAI indices.
Strengths
High broad-sense heritability reported for key traits, including total yield per plant (80.73%) and dry recovery (95.73%).
Strong genotypic variation (>20% coefficient of variation) for yield components indicates clear selection potential.
Data is derived from a structured field trial using an augmented randomized complete block design over two years.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The dataset is small in size (93.7 KB), suggesting limited scope or summary-level data.
