Description
Four crop tests in the European Space Agency's Plant Characterization Unit examined the impacts of sodium chloride addition and potassium reduction on lettuce. Plant growth was monitored via oxygen and water production, projected leaf area, canopy temperature, and post-harvest photosynthesis parameters and elemental composition. The dataset, authored by Geremia Pellegri and last updated in March 2026, shows that suboptimal nutrition can decrease plant performance in bioregenerative life support systems.
Use Cases
Modeling the impact of saline stress on crop biomass production based on sodium chloride concentration treatments.
Analyzing the relationship between potassium levels and oxygen/water production rates in closed-loop systems.
Comparing plant development metrics like projected leaf area and canopy temperature across different nutrient formulations.
Studying plant-to-plant variability in controlled growth experiments for experimental design refinement.
Strengths
Includes two control treatments (Control_1 and Control_2) to assess experimental repeatability.
Monitors multiple growth parameters: O2 production, water production, projected leaf area, canopy temperature, and post-harvest metrics.
Explicitly tests specific nutrient modifications: addition of 27 mM NaCl and reduction of potassium.
Data is associated with a specific research facility: the Plant Characterization Unit of the European Space Agency.
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
The description notes high plant-to-plant variability and considerable differences between the two control runs.
