Description
The SCREED project database contains samples collected from carbonatite-hosted rare earth element deposits. Samples were gathered from Sokli (Finland), Miaoya (China), and Longonjo (Angola) complexes, with archival materials from Mongolia, Russia, and Vietnam. The collection was acquired by teams from the University of Brighton and University of Exeter with assistance from industry and academic collaborators.
Use Cases
Modeling supergene enrichment processes based on samples from thick lateritic materials.
Characterizing early-stage weathering styles based on incipiently weathered clays from a carbonatite-syenite complex.
Comparing REE mineralization across different deposits based on samples from multiple global carbonatite complexes.
Supporting mineral exploration targeting based on field grab samples and drill core from active exploration sites.
Strengths
Samples target specific geological contexts, including thick (40-100m) lateritic materials.
Collection includes materials from six distinct carbonatite complexes across multiple continents.
Samples were acquired with institutional collaboration from universities, industry, and research institutes.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
