33 thalassemia major patients with normal conventional echocardiography results were found to have significantly impaired cardiac function when evaluated by Tissue Doppler echocardiography. The study, led by Melike Sezgin Evim from Bursa Uludağ University, combined T2* MRI and Tissue Doppler measurements to assess myocardial iron overload and dysfunction. 63.6% of patients had myocardial iron overload, which correlated with impaired myocardial performance index measurements.
