Discrete profile measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity, temperature, salinity, oxygen, nutrients, and delta C13 were collected during the R/V Discovery cruise D379 in the North Atlantic Ocean from July 31 to August 17, 2012. The data are part of the Extended Ellett Line programme, a hydrographic section between Iceland and Scotland occupied annually by scientists from the National Oceanography Centre and the Scottish Association for Marine Science. The programme began in 1975 and was extended to Iceland in 1996, sampling the Rockall Trough, Hatton-Rockall Basin, and Iceland Basin.
Use Cases
- Calculate time series of upper ocean temperature and salinity based on the hydrographic section data.
- Analyze Labrador Sea Water properties in the eastern subpolar gyre based on the profile measurements.
- Model ocean carbon and acidification processes based on dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity measurements.
- Study nutrient distributions and their impact on marine ecosystems based on the nutrient data.
- Construct temperature, salinity, and density sections for oceanographic visualization based on the cruise data.
Strengths
- Data is part of a long-term monitoring programme that began in 1975 and was extended in 1996.
- Measurements cover multiple ocean basins: Rockall Trough, Hatton-Rockall Basin, and Iceland Basin.
- Includes multiple key oceanographic variables: dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity, temperature, salinity, oxygen, nutrients, and delta C13.
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
