Description
From September 6 to November 10, 1994, this dataset contains chemical, physical, and profile data collected from the research vessel JOHN P. TULLY in the North Pacific Ocean, Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, and South Pacific Ocean. It includes measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity, chlorofluorocarbons, nutrients, and other variables, collected as part of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) Hydrographic Program. The data were gathered by C. S. Wong of Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Institute of Ocean Sciences.
Use Cases
Model oceanic carbon uptake and storage based on dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity measurements.
Study historical chlorofluorocarbon distributions as ocean tracers based on CFC-11 and CFC-12 data.
Analyze nutrient cycling in ocean basins based on nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and silicate measurements.
Investigate ocean circulation and water mass properties based on salinity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen profiles.
Calibrate or validate climate models using the comprehensive chemical and physical profile data from a major international experiment.
Strengths
Data collected as part of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), a major international climate research program.
Includes multiple key variables for carbon cycle and ocean chemistry studies, such as DIC, TA, CFCs, and nutrients.
Associated with a specific cruise ID (WOCE_P15Na and b) within a larger collection of approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic and temporal bias inherent to a single cruise in 1994.
Provenance
Source
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce
Collection Method
Data collected from discrete sample and profile observations using Alkalinity titrator, CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement, and bottle sampling.
