Description
Discrete sample and profile data for dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity, nutrients, and other variables were collected from the HEALY research vessel in the Arctic Ocean, Beaufort Sea, and Bering Sea from May to June 2002. The dataset includes measurements of ammonium, chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature, and over 20 other parameters using CTD, PAR sensors, and bottles. Data were collected by researchers from the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, and University of Maryland as part of the CARINA data synthesis project.
Use Cases
Modeling ocean carbon uptake and acidification based on dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity measurements.
Studying phytoplankton productivity and nutrient cycling based on chlorophyll, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate data.
Analyzing water mass properties and circulation based on salinity, temperature, and hydrostatic pressure profiles.
Investigating organic matter dynamics based on dissolved and particulate organic carbon and nitrogen measurements.
Strengths
Includes over 20 distinct chemical, biological, and physical variables for a comprehensive biogeochemical snapshot.
Data is part of the CARINA international synthesis project, which aims for internal consistency.
Covers a specific six-week cruise in the Arctic Ocean, Beaufort Sea, and Bering Sea during May-June 2002.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale modeling.
Data may reflect geographic and temporal bias inherent to a single research cruise.
