Description
R/V James Clark Ross cruise JR18002 collected discrete profile measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chlorofluorocarbons, and carbon-14/13 along the GO-SHIP Section SR01b in the Drake Passage, South Atlantic Ocean, and Southern Ocean from 2018-11-03 to 2018-11 23. The dataset is part of the International GO-SHIP Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program, which systematically re-occupies hydrographic sections to quantify changes in heat, freshwater, and carbon dioxide storage and transport. The data is provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce.
Use Cases
Modeling ocean carbon uptake and acidification based on dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity measurements.
Analyzing water mass circulation and ventilation rates based on chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) tracer data.
Studying nutrient cycling and biological productivity based on nitrate, silicate, and phosphate measurements.
Calibrating and validating ocean biogeochemical models based on the suite of co-located hydrographic and chemical parameters.
Strengths
Includes a comprehensive suite of co-located parameters crucial for carbon cycle studies, such as DIC, alkalinity, CFCs, and carbon isotopes.
Data is collected as part of the systematic, globally coordinated GO-SHIP repeat hydrography program, ensuring methodological consistency.
Covers a critical region for global climate, the Drake Passage and Southern Ocean, from a specific cruise (JR18002) in November 2018.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for certain statistical analyses.
Data is from a single cruise over a 20-day period, limiting temporal representation.
