Over 10 chemical and physical variables, including dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity, and pH, were collected from discrete water samples and CTD profiles during a 23-day research cruise in the North Atlantic Ocean. The data were gathered by scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization and Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas de Vigo as part of the CARINA synthesis project. Measurements were taken from July 30 to August 21, 1998.
Use Cases
- Calculate ocean acidification metrics by analyzing pH and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) relationships across salinity and temperature gradients.
- Model carbon system parameters using alkalinity, DIC, nitrate, and phosphate measurements to estimate partial pressure of CO2.
- Investigate water mass characteristics by correlating potential temperature (theta), salinity, and dissolved oxygen profiles with hydrostatic pressure.
- Study nutrient cycles through co-analysis of ammonium, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate concentrations from bottle samples.
Strengths
- Includes over 10 key biogeochemical variables per observation, enabling multivariate analysis.
- Data collected over a 23-day continuous cruise, providing temporal consistency within the sampling period.
- Part of the CARINA international synthesis project, implying quality control and internal consistency checks.
Limitations
- Single cruise provides limited spatial and temporal coverage, confined to a specific North Atlantic region in 1998.
- Unknown row count and sample depth resolution prevents assessment of statistical power for trend analysis.
- Data is over 25 years old, limiting relevance for studying recent ocean acidification or circulation changes.
