Discrete sample and profile data collected from the RYOFU MARU research vessel in the North and South Pacific Ocean between September and November 1998. The dataset includes measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon, pH, alkalinity, chlorofluorocarbons, nutrients, chlorophyll, and physical oceanographic parameters. Data were collected by Sukeyoshi Takatani of the Japan Meteorological Agency and Masao Ishii of the Meteorological Research Institute as part of the PACIFICA international synthesis project.
Use Cases
- Modeling ocean carbon uptake and acidification based on dissolved inorganic carbon and pH measurements.
- Analyzing historical chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) distributions as ocean tracers based on CFC-11 and CFC-12 data.
- Studying marine nutrient cycles and phytoplankton dynamics based on nitrate, phosphate, silicate, and chlorophyll a measurements.
- Calibrating ocean biogeochemical models using concurrent profiles of physical (temperature, salinity) and chemical parameters.
Strengths
- Data covers a specific research cruise (PACIFICA_49RY19980916) with a defined time range (1998-09-16 to 1998-11-13).
- Includes a wide range of co-located chemical, biological, and physical parameters, as listed in the description.
- Data were collected by named researchers from recognized institutions (Japan Meteorological Agency, Meteorological Research Institute).
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Last updated 1998-11-13; freshness should be verified for contemporary applications.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale modeling.
