The Coral Sea, North Pacific Ocean, South Pacific Ocean, and Tasman Sea are covered by this dataset of ocean interior carbon and related parameters. It includes alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, salinity, temperature, and pH collected via CTD and bottle samples from the HAKUREI MARU during April to June 1995. The data were collected by Akira Nishimura of the Geological Survey of Japan and Yutaka W. Watanabe of Hokkaido University as part of the PACIFICA project.
Use Cases
- Modeling ocean acidification based on pH and dissolved inorganic carbon measurements
- Analyzing nutrient distributions based on nitrate, phosphate, and silicate concentrations
- Studying marine productivity based on chlorophyll a data
- Investigating water column properties based on CTD-derived temperature, salinity, and pressure profiles
Strengths
- Data covers multiple ocean basins (Coral Sea, North Pacific, South Pacific, Tasman Sea)
- Includes multiple related chemical and physical parameters (12 variables listed)
- Data collected via standardized instruments (CTD, Coulometer, bottle)
- Project supported by an international organization (PICES)
Limitations
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
- Data may reflect temporal bias inherent to a single cruise in 1995
