Description
NODC Accession 0115017 contains chemical and physical oceanographic data collected during the WOCE_P09 cruise aboard the Ryofu Maru II. The dataset includes measurements for dissolved inorganic carbon, chlorofluorocarbons, nutrients, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and salinity from the Bismarck Sea, North Pacific Ocean, Philippine Sea, and South Pacific Ocean. Data were collected by Masao Ishii of the Japan Meteorological Agency using CTD and bottle instruments between July 7 and August 25, 1994.
Use Cases
Analyzing the relationship between dissolved inorganic carbon and water temperature or salinity to study ocean acidification drivers.
Modeling ocean circulation patterns using tracer data like delta Helium-3, Tritium, and CFC-11/CFC-12 concentrations.
Investigating nutrient distributions (nitrate, phosphate, silicate) relative to hydrostatic pressure and potential temperature (theta).
Calibrating or validating biogeochemical models with in-situ profiles of dissolved oxygen and delta Carbon-14.
Assessing spatial variability of ocean chemistry across the Bismarck Sea, North Pacific Ocean, Philippine Sea, and South Pacific Ocean.
Strengths
Data collected as part of the standardized World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) program, ensuring methodological consistency.
Includes multiple key tracers for climate and circulation studies, such as CFCs, Helium isotopes, and dissolved inorganic carbon.
Covers a specific, well-documented cruise (WOCE_P09) across four distinct ocean regions during a focused 50-day period.
Limitations
Temporal coverage is limited to a single cruise in 1994, providing only a snapshot in time.
Specific sample count, row numbers, and data resolution per station are unknown from the provided metadata.
Geographic coverage is restricted to the cruise track in the Pacific, not a global or continuous spatial dataset.
