1992 cruise data from the POLARSTERN research vessel includes dissolved inorganic carbon, temperature, salinity, nutrients, and chlorofluorocarbons. The dataset was collected by Peter Lemke of the Alfred Wegener Institute during the WOCE_A12_ANTX_4 expedition from May to August 1992. Measurements support the International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program.
Use Cases
- Analyze DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON against SALINITY and WATER TEMPERATURE to study ocean carbon storage.
- Model the relationship between CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11) and Potential temperature (theta) as tracers of water mass age.
- Correlate NITRATE, PHOSPHATE, and SILICATE concentrations with DISSOLVED OXYGEN to assess biological productivity.
- Examine DELTA HELIUM-3 and Tritium data alongside HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE profiles for ventilation studies.
Strengths
- Includes 16 distinct chemical and physical variables per observation profile.
- Data collected during a dedicated World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) cruise for quality control.
Limitations
- Single cruise provides limited temporal coverage, confined to a 2.5-month period in 1992.
- Geographic scope is restricted to the South Atlantic Ocean track of the POLARSTERN.
- Sample size and row count are unknown, limiting statistical power assessment.

- Source
- NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI Accession 0116641).
- Collection Method
- Discrete sample and profile observations using CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement, and bottle samples.
- Time Range
- 1992-05-21 to 1992-08 05.
- Freshness
- null
- Geography
- South Atlantic Ocean, along the cruise track of the POLARSTERN during WOCE_A12_ANTX_4.
