CSIRO Marine National Facility collected oceanographic profiles of dissolved iron (DFe) at the Southern Ocean Time Series during voyages IN2018_V02 and IN2019_V02 aboard RV Investigator. Profiles were obtained using a 12-bottle trace metal rosette following GEOTRACES procedures. Full sampling and analytical details are documented in Ellwood et al., (2020a) and Ellwood et al., (2020b).
Use Cases
- Modeling dissolved iron distribution in the Southern Ocean based on profile depth data.
- Investigating trace metal biogeochemical cycles based on GEOTRACES-standardized measurements.
- Calibrating oceanographic sensors using high-quality, intercalibrated dissolved iron concentrations.
- Assessing seasonal or interannual variability in marine iron availability based on time-series data.
Strengths
- Data collection followed established GEOTRACES cleaning, sampling, analytical, and intercalibration procedures.
- Profiles were collected using specialized equipment: a 12-bottle trace metal rosette with acid-washed, externally sprung Niskin bottles.
- Methodology is documented in peer-reviewed publications (Ellwood et al., 2020a; Ellwood et al., 2020b).
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
