ECOSTRESS: Global 70-Meter Gridded Evapotranspiration from the ISS

ECOSTRESS, attached to the International Space Station, measures plant temperature to understand water use and stress response. The ECO_L3G_JET Version 2 product provides instantaneous and daily estimates of canopy transpiration, leaf evaporation, and soil evaporation at a 70-meter resolution, mosaicked onto a global 0.0006° grid. This data is produced by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and covers latitudes between 52° N and 52° S.

Use Cases

• Modeling agricultural water stress and irrigation needs based on canopy transpiration (PTJPLSMcanopy) and soil evaporation (PTJPLSMsoil) layers.
• Analyzing ecosystem responses to drought using the instantaneous evapotranspiration (ETinst) and its uncertainty (ETinstUncertainty) metrics.
• Validating and comparing global evapotranspiration algorithms using the multiple method layers (STICinst, MOD16inst, BESSinst).
• Masking out non-land areas for analysis using the provided cloud mask and water mask layers.

Strengths

• Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics for the 12 HDF5 layers must be inferred after download.
