A 2026 study by the Australian Ocean Data Network compares phytoplankton and benthic microalgae responses to nutrient loads across tidal creeks with and without secondary treated sewage in a tropical estuary. The research measured concentrations of sewage markers, nitrogen, phosphorus, primary productivity rates, and chlorophyll a. It provides in-situ data on the scale and type of algal community response to sewage-derived nutrients.
