Description
Livestock density maps for Eritrea, covering buffalo, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens for the reference year 2020. The data provides animal counts per square kilometer, generated by a Random Forest model at a 5-minute arc resolution, approximately 10 km at the equator. The dataset was published by the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC) and last updated in March 2026.
Use Cases
Modeling livestock distribution and carrying capacity based on per-species density maps.
Assessing agricultural resource allocation and food security based on livestock population data.
Integrating livestock density layers into environmental impact studies based on geospatial raster data.
Analyzing regional land use and economic activity patterns based on the distribution of six key livestock species.
Strengths
Covers six key livestock species: buffalo, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens.
Provides global data at a consistent 5-minute arc resolution, approximately 10 km at the equator.
Uses a Random Forest model for density estimation, as stated in the description.
Has a specific reference year of 2020 for temporal consistency.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
The dataset's size and row count are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Freshness should be verified as the last update date is in the future (2026-03-17).
