Description
Parks Australia provides data from a 2010 pilot study in Perth, Western Australia, that estimated shore-based recreational fishing effort and catch. The study combined aerial surveys, roving creel interviews with 1,194 incomplete trips, and 24-hour camera monitoring to estimate 213,460 angler-hours of effort and a retained catch of 355,801 fish, dominated by Australian herring. The method was developed to improve the accuracy of estimates for nearshore fish stock management.
Use Cases
Estimating total recreational fishing effort based on combined aerial, roving, and camera survey data.
Analyzing temporal patterns of shore-based fishing activity, including afternoon peaks and nighttime activity, from 24-hour camera records.
Calculating species-specific retained catch rates, such as for Australian herring, using roving creel survey data.
Comparing the cost-effectiveness of survey designs that incorporate remote cameras with other on-site techniques.
Strengths
Estimates derived from a multi-method survey combining 1,194 incomplete trip interviews, aerial counts, and 24-hour camera monitoring.
Provides specific catch and effort estimates: 213,460 angler-hours of effort and a retained catch of 355,801 fish, with standard errors reported.
Focuses on a specific geographic area (Perth coast) and time period (April to June 2010), providing a clear case study.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Data is from a single pilot study in 2010; temporal and geographic generalizability may be limited.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale modeling.
