Description
A structured survey dataset documents the external food environment for two traditional Colombian crops, Sechium edule (chayote) and Bactris gasipaes (peach palm). Data were collected from December 2025 to January 2026 at food access points in Palmira and Cartago, Colombia, under the Power of Diversity Funding Facility. The dataset captures access-point characteristics, crop availability, seasonality, supplier relationships, price fluctuations, and retail practices.
Use Cases
Analyze price fluctuations and seasonality based on documented price variation across the year and months of availability.
Map food access points and supplier networks based on GPS coordinates and supplier source information.
Study retail practices and market constraints based on data on product form, packaging, display, storage, and retail costs.
Model food access and availability based on access-point characteristics and reasons for crop non-availability.
Strengths
Data collection was approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) and involved written informed consent from respondents.
Surveys captured a wide range of variables including GPS coordinates, price variation, supplier agreements, and retail conditions.
The study focuses on two specific crops in two defined municipalities, providing a targeted view of local food systems.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale modeling.
The geographic scope is limited to two municipalities in the Valle del Cauca Department.
