Holocene Estuary and Delta Facies Evolution Across Australia

A 2026 study by Geoscience Australia mapped geomorphic features and sedimentary facies in 283 wave- and tide-dominated estuaries and deltas across Australia. The data was used to quantitatively evaluate established evolutionary facies models and reveal new insights about the transition from estuaries to deltas during stable sea level conditions. This is described as the first published example of such data assembled from a large number of systems across an entire continent.
