High-resolution ocean simulations with detailed paleobathymetry demonstrate the role of tectonic gateway opening in Southern Ocean climate change around 34 million years ago. The dataset, hosted by the Australian Ocean Data Network, shows that gateway subsidence below 300 meters can cause Antarctic surface water cooling of 2–4°C on average, up to 5°C. These results are consistent with available proxy data and suggest tectonic changes are crucial for constraining long-term climate sensitivity to CO2.
