The Australian Institute of Marine Science Long-Term Monitoring Program (LTMP) conducted large-scale manta tow surveys from 1986 to 2005 to quantify spatial and temporal changes in crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) density and benthic cover on the Great Barrier Reef. The highest overall mean number of COTS per tow was 1.17 in 1988, and active or incipient outbreaks were recorded on 16% and 11% of surveyed reefs in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Observations were interpolated over the whole GBR using Generalized Additive Models, producing gridded data available as KML and ASCII grid files.
Primary data formats are geospatial (KML, KMZ, ASCII grid, WMS), which may require specific GIS tools for analysis.
