Satellite-derived water cloud optical thickness maps provide a dimensionless measure of cloud density. The data is produced by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) from the SGLI sensor onboard the GCOM-C satellite, launched in December 2017. It is a Level 3 product offering 8-day, 1-day, and 1-month statistical composites at a 1/12-degree spatial resolution.
Data is provided in HDF5 format and uses the EQR map projection, requiring compatible geospatial software for use. Version 2 data is also available alongside the current Version 3.
