GEOS-5 Atmospheric Profiles Co-located with OMI VIS Satellite Swath

Global atmospheric parameters from the GEOS-5 Forward Processing for Instrument Teams (FP-IT) assimilation product are co-located with the OMI/Aura VIS instrument's orbital swath. The dataset includes surface pressure, vertical temperature and wind profiles, tropopause pressure, boundary layer top pressure, and surface geopotential. It was produced by the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) for use by the OMI team and related research.

• Assimilate surface_pressure and vertical_temperature_profiles into satellite-based trace gas retrieval algorithms to improve accuracy.

Strengths

• Data is spatially and temporally co-located with the OMI VIS instrument's 13km x 24km nadir resolution swath.
• Vertical profiles are provided with 47 layers, a practical reduction from the original 72-layer model output.

Limitations

• Original GEOS-5 FP-IT data is regridded from a 0.625°x0.5° grid to the satellite swath, introducing interpolation uncertainty.
• Vertical layers above the troposphere are combined, reducing resolution for stratospheric analysis.
