Description
The Geoscience Australia Boreholes database includes borehole header and directional survey data from multiple sources. It contains boreholes drilled by Geoscience Australia and its predecessors, resource exploration boreholes in Australian Commonwealth offshore marine jurisdictions, and a selection of onshore mineral, groundwater, geothermal, and seismic boreholes. The data is sourced from various state, territory, and Commonwealth regulatory authorities for research purposes.
Use Cases
Analyze subsurface geology based on borehole location and survey data.
Model groundwater resources based on borehole data from onshore groundwater projects.
Map mineral exploration targets based on directional survey data from onshore mineral exploration boreholes.
Assess geothermal energy potential based on data from geothermal boreholes.
Conduct marine geological research based on offshore resource exploration borehole data.
Strengths
Data is sourced from multiple authoritative government bodies, including Geoscience Australia and its predecessor organizations (BMR, AGSO).
Covers a variety of borehole types, including mineral exploration, groundwater, geothermal, seismic, and offshore resource exploration.
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network
Collection Method
Sourced from various regulatory authorities in the States, Northern Territory, and Commonwealth governments.
Freshness
Last updated 2026-06-23 02:45:56.624021; freshness should be verified.
Geography
Primarily Australia, including Commonwealth offshore marine jurisdictions, with a small number of research-related boreholes outside Australian jurisdiction.
Geoscience Australia is not the authoritative custodian for all data; the original custodian agency should be consulted as the authoritative source.
