Description
GEWEX SRB_Rel4_1-IP_Longwave_3hrly_landonly contains 26 longwave radiative parameters for land surfaces globally. The dataset provides 3-hourly all-sky, clear-sky, and pristine-sky upward and downward fluxes at the surface, 500hPa, 200hPa, tropopause, and Top of Atmosphere. It covers July 1983 through December 1987, derived from ISCCP cloud data, ISCCP nnHIRS meteorology, Landflux surface data, and MERRA-2 inputs.
Use Cases
Validating climate model simulations of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) using the provided TOA upward flux data.
Analyzing diurnal cycles of atmospheric heating using the 3-hourly flux profiles at multiple pressure levels.
Studying cloud radiative forcing effects by comparing all-sky, clear-sky, and pristine-sky flux values.
Assessing surface energy balance over continents with the included surface upward and downward longwave fluxes.
Strengths
Provides a specific, land-only extension of the main GEWEX SRB Release 4 product with 26 distinct radiative parameters.
Covers a defined historical period from July 1983 to December 1987 with 3-hourly temporal resolution.
Integrates inputs from multiple authoritative sources including ISCCP, Landflux, and MERRA-2.
Limitations
Metadata completeness is low; specific column names, row counts, and file sizes are not provided.
Conflicting 'last updated' dates exist between platforms (2026-04-10 on Data.gov vs. 1987-12-31 on NASA Earthdata).
Temporal coverage is limited to 4.5 years, whereas the related daily product spans 1988-2009.
