Description
770 Sentinel-3B satellite passes provide 20,239 stacked sea surface height records between +/-81.419 degrees latitude, derived from repeat cycles 19 to 38. The dataset, created by NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), contains median sea surface height profiles, longitude, latitude, and error estimates. It was last updated in April 2020.
Use Cases
Analyze spatial patterns of sea surface height anomalies using the longitude and latitude coordinates for 20,239 points.
Assess measurement uncertainty for sea level studies by utilizing the sigma column representing the expected one sigma error.
Validate satellite altimeter data processing pipelines by comparing stacked median sea surface height profiles from multiple repeat cycles.
Study the consistency of sea surface height measurements across different satellite cycles using the number_of_cycles column.
Map global sea surface height profiles within the +/-81.419 latitude coverage to monitor ocean circulation and thermal expansion.
Strengths
Contains 20,239 geospatial records of stacked sea surface height.
Covers a wide latitudinal range from -81.419 to +81.419 degrees.
Data is derived from 770 distinct satellite altimeter passes, providing spatial coverage.
Uses median stacking from multiple repeat cycles (19 to 38) to reduce noise.
Limitations
Temporal coverage is limited to a specific set of satellite cycles (19-38), not a continuous long-term record.
The dataset's last update was in 2020, making it potentially stale for current climate studies.
Specific row count for the original passes is unknown, limiting assessment of raw data volume.
