Description
NASA's GPM Ground Validation ACHIEVE W-band Cloud Radar IPHEx dataset contains vertical-pointing radar observations of clouds and light precipitation. Data was collected from a mobile 95 GHz dual-polarization Doppler radar in North Carolina from May 9 to June 14, 2014, to validate satellite precipitation measurements. The instrument measured co- and cross-polar reflectivity, radial velocity, Doppler spectrum width, and signal-to-noise ratio.
Use Cases
Validating satellite-based precipitation estimates from the GPM mission using ground-based radar reflectivity data.
Improving regional hydrology models with high-resolution, ground-truthed precipitation and cloud observations.
Analyzing microphysical properties of liquid and ice clouds using dual-polarization radar parameters like linear depolarization ratio.
Studying vertical profiles of cloud and light precipitation dynamics via time-series data from a vertically-pointing radar.
Strengths
Data originates from a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center mobile laboratory, indicating a controlled collection method.
Provides a focused time series from a specific intensive observing period (May 9 - June 14, 2014).
Contains derived scientific parameters like linear depolarization ratio alongside direct radar measurements.
Limitations
Key metadata is incomplete: column names are listed as 'unknown' and row counts/sizes are not provided.
Conflicting license information: listed as 'other-license-specified' on one platform but 'None' on another.
Limited spatial scope, as the radar was used exclusively in vertical-pointing mode at a single location during the campaign.
