Description
Geoscience Australia produced a set of digital bathymetry, gravity, and magnetic grids for the southwest quadrant of Australia. The grids cover a region from 24 to 46 degrees South and 106 to 140 degrees East, integrating land, marine, and satellite data. The results were obtained by performing a network adjustment on marine ship-track data and combining these with onshore and satellite-derived data.
Use Cases
Modeling tectonic plate boundaries based on gravity and magnetic anomaly data.
Mapping seafloor topography for navigation and habitat studies based on bathymetry grids.
Integrating land and marine geophysical surveys for regional geological interpretation based on the combined dataset.
Strengths
Grids cover a large, defined region (24-46S, 106-140E).
Data integrates multiple sources: land, marine, and satellite.
Work involved cooperation with external organizations (Desmond Fitzgerald & Associates, Australian Hydrographic Office).
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Provenance
Source
Geoscience Australia Data, in cooperation with Desmond Fitzgerald & Associates and the Australian Hydrographic Office.
Collection Method
Network adjustment performed on marine ship-track data, combined with onshore and satellite-derived data.
