Description
Geoscience Australia's dataset classifies the geomorphological features of the Great Artesian Basin, including its offshore extents beneath the Gulf of Carpentaria. It groups features into five categories based on depositional environment: Marine, Fluvial, Aeolian, Playa-lacustrine, and Erosional terrain. The dataset and its metadata are available from the Geoscience Australia catalogue using number 81673.
Use Cases
Map and analyze marine depositional environments based on the 'Marine' geomorphological classification.
Study ancient and modern fluvial systems based on the 'Fluvial' classification.
Model aeolian (wind-driven) landform distribution based on the 'Aeolian' category.
Assess playa-lacustrine and erosional terrain extents for hydrological and geological research.
Strengths
Includes offshore extents of the basin beneath the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Features are classified into five specific depositional environment categories.
Associated with a published Hydrogeological Atlas (catalogue number 79790).
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count and file size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to data_gov_au.
Provenance
Source
Geoscience Australia, Australian Ocean Data Network
Collection Method
Likely derived from geological surveys, remote sensing, and bathymetric data.
